Tuesday 27th of March

The church is heading towards completion as frenetic activity starts to show results.  On this sunny tuesday a happy band of volunteers assembled to clean and polish the old pews and some new chairs were delivered.  English Martyrs is looking like a church again!

“STOP PRESS” last mass in Parish Church

The last Catholic Mass in St Mary’s Parish Church will take place on Wednesday 28th of March 2012.  This will bring to an end this historic phase where we have been able to conduct our daily worship in a church that has not seen a Catholic Mass for over 400 years. We will of course thank our  friends and colleagues in Church of England officially for their generous and unprecedented support whilst our building has been receiving much needed attention.  It is with great joy that we return to our spiritual home in the newly re furbished English Martyrs Church. We are having mass Thursday 29th March and Friday 30th March in the Presbytery BUT if it is at all possible we will worship in our church on Friday!

Friday 23rd of March

Today was another exciting stage in the restoration of our church, the new Crucifix was installed. Parishoner Fred Arkwright has made a new cross from Cherry wood and Father Phillip has had a beautiful figure restored to be mounted on it. I think you will agree this makes a very imposing Crucifix as a centre piece to our Mass.

Wednesday 21st March

About half of the main part of the church is now carpeted, and the kitchen and toilet floors are finished. The kitchen awaits the sink and the tiles around the work top and then it will be finished.

Tuesday 20th March

As the work in the church comes to conclusion there are a myriad of little jobs left to do.  Today the kitchen and new toilet floors have had their covering glued down. The old altar dais carpet is in very good condition and may be reused in a smaller space. The main floor covering theme is green so it won’t appear in the main church. Tomorrow the fitter starts laying the carpet tiles in the main body of the church. It is planned that the pews will go back in on Friday.
